European Year for Creativity and Innovation

9 May 2009

At Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège, almost 1,000 people attended an audacious concert mixing famous operatic arias with electronic music.

Opéra de Lille celebrated Istanbul, crossroads between East and West, tradition and modernity. Visitors enjoyed traditional Turkish music as well as works by young Turkish composers of the new generation.

National Theatre Brno presented fragments of a free re-construction of Jacopo Peri's La Dafne by the contemporary artists' group ‘postopera.forma’. A short interactive performance invited preschool children to play the main role and touch, taste and feel opera, while teenagers learned the basics of graffiti and street dance in front of the Janáček theatre. A round-table discussion about creativity and innovation in opera was organised with musicologists, composers and creative teams, and the theatre's most innovative productions shown on screen.
