European Year for Intercultural Dialogue

15 - 17 February 2008

The National Moravian-Silesian Theatre in Ostrava used European Opera Days to launch a new and appropriately intercultural project, KOLOTOC 2008. The project aimed to unite different social groups in the region – young people, pensioners and members of minority groups – together through the opera.

The Opéra national de Lyon offered a series of 15-minute micro-concerts to reflect the diversity of music (classical or world, chanson, rock…) and inviting all-comers to try out waltz, tango or battle hip hop.

In Paris, la Péniche Opéra showed how today’s opera companies respectfully reinvent opera with an open rehearsal of Variation autour de la Viole(s), a new work for viola, counter tenor and hip-hop dancer.

In Helsinki, amidst an inspiring and packed open day, Finnish National Opera brought together opera and photography in a specially-commissioned exhibition about the FNO’s craftsmen and technical departments at work.

Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre in Vilnius built an open day around a production of Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice. Thanks to the director's concept, this production showcased an extraordinary connection between two spheres of art - opera and ballet.
